Iconic America: A Roller-Coaster Ride through the Eye-Popping Panorama of American Pop Culture,
This huge coffee table book is a glorious romp through the vast history of icons in American culture. It is a tribute to the creativity, perseverance, and boundary breaking attitude that define The United States of America. Tommy Hilfiger has compiled and annotated a massive list of items, people, events, and symbols that define the American experience and which have left an indelible mark on the country, the world, and (in some cases) humanity. He provides brief descriptions of each item beside a picture. Everything from the NASA meatball logo to the CBS eye, from the iron horse to the Edsel, from Mohamed Ali to Bette Davis, to Betty Boop, from the moon landings to the assassination of President Kennedy are on display. The author clearly has great pride in the USA and you will too when you see the scope of the many people and things that have come to define this, still, young country. It is awe-inspiring and also simply fun to flip through the pages and either be reminded of or discover that something was an American first. I went through this book with my kids as I suspect that, in school, they don’t learn about half the stuff in this book. There is so much. This a great page turner for the young, middle aged, and old.
